Industrial districts are seen as generating significant advantages in production and innovation. However, the way concentrations of firms actually relate to one another is often assumed. This paper draws on an international study into the opto-electronics industry to examine the extent and significance of localized inter-company trading and network relationships in six regions. National and international relationships are found to be much stronger than local ones. This is a function of customer and supplier markets, which derive from the technological characteristics of the industry and the way its markets have been created.
