Research on Rare Earth Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanospheres.Ii. Mechanisms of in Vitro Biological Effects

To further explain the biological effect mechanism of rare earth-doped mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) nanospheres, taking cerium-doped MBG (Ce/MBG) nanospheres as an example, the in vitro biological effect mechanism of Ce/MBG nanospheres was systematically studied. Cerium enters the MBG network structure, partially replacing calcium as a network modifier, while doxorubicin (DOX) is adsorbed into the mesoporous structure through electrostatic interactions, which endows Ce/MBG nanospheres with excellent bioactivity and DOX controlled-release behavior. Results also found that Ce/MBG nanospheres can promote osteogenic differentiation of MG63 cells. Meanwhile, Ce/MBG-DOX nanospheres exhibited synergistic cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing activity in MG63 cells. These synergistic effects were sourced from the combination of Ce and DOX. It can be speculated that other types of RE-doped MBG nanospheres have similar biological properties, so their biological mechanisms are similar, further work will verify this hypothesis. In conclusion, this study provides an interesting research idea for bone cancer treatment
