Este número especial de la revista Integración & Comercio presenta una serie de artículos en torno al impacto del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) en las exportaciones de prendas de vestir procedentes de América Central y República Dominicana destinadas al mercado de EE.UU. en el marco de la Iniciativa para la Cuenca del Caribe. La edición contiene los siguientes artículos: Comercio internacional de los textiles y el vestido: Reestructuración global de las fuentes de oferta en EE.UU. durante la década de los años noventa; La transformación de la industria de la indumentaria en América del Norte: ¿Es el TLCAN una maldición o una bendición?; Los desbalances de los países de la Cuenca del Caribe frente al TLCAN: La industria de la confección; América Central y República Dominicana: Modernización y ajuste en la maquila de confección; La posición de los países del Istmo Centroamericano, Belice y República Dominicana en las importaciones de EE.UU.; Las políticas macroeconómicas y el entorno legal-institucional en la industria maquiladora de exportación de México y Centroamérica.Abstract: This special issue of the Integration & Trade Journal contains a collection of articles on the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on garment exports from Central America and the Dominican Republic to the US market in the framework of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). They mainly serve to draw conclusions about policies and business strategies that could allow the selected countries to take better advantage of the privileged but temporary access to the US market offered by the widening of CBI benefits that went into effect in October 2000.
