Revolutionalising Higher Education in Nigeria to Meet Emerging Global Challenges : Focus on ICT, Curriculum Innovation and Research

This paper examined how to revolutionalise higher education in Nigeria to meet emerging global challenges with focus on ICT, curriculum innovation and research. The best in higher education cannot come out of the present crop of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This is because the necessary tools that will facilitate teaching and learning which could make Nigerian brace up with global challenges are not there. The alternative for now is to think of revolutionilising tertiary institution in Nigeria with a view to getting them adequately prepared to meet the emerging global challenges. The three biting areas being considered in this paper are ICT, curriculum innovation and research. While the question of relevance in most of the curricula in tertiary institutions is raised, the level of usage of ICT on most Nigeria campuses is below expectations. Research stands out clearly among the duties of lecturers in tertiary institutions but the research aspect at the moment is dying a natural death and therefore needs to be reviewed urgently. It is on these premises that a number of recommendations are advanced. The curricula in tertiary institutions should be reviewed to make them more relevant and problem oriented. The nation should be able to solve her problems through the kind of curricula that are put in place, among others
