Rural-urban migration and poverty in South Asia

After discussing theories and models of rural-urban migration and rural labour market, family income, assets and migration in South Asia, the authors scrutinize the process of rural-urban migration of landless rural families in the sub-continent using field data from a slum area in Calcutta and villages in West Bengal and Bangladesh. A "push-factor" in the migration-decision of these families is demonstrated. (DÜI-Sen)
