Satisfied employees keep better track of tornadoes at the US National Weather Service : Cultural change boosts staff performance
Purpose – To examine a comprehensive leadership‐skills and diversity program established by the US National Weather Service to bring about positive cultural change and improved organizational performance. Design/methodology/approach – The article is based on information provided by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and survey company Sirota Europe. Findings – The article shows that, where diversity is promoted and supported by an inclusive environment, organizations can expect to see: the fostering of innovation; the creation of a safer working environment; higher levels of employee commitment, engagement and pride; a positive impact on customer satisfaction; and improved financial performance. Practical implications – The article suggests key areas in which organizations can effect change and bring about a real improvement in performance. Originality/value – The article will be of value to human‐resource specialists seeking to introduce a comprehensive workforce‐diversity policy in their organizations.
