Slimmed‐down EMI retains its star performers : Protecting the employer “brand” at times of redundancy
Purpose – Details major reforms at EMI, including a significant cut in the number of employees, following a private‐equity‐firm buy‐out. Design/methodology/approach – Focuses on how consultancy firm Penna worked with EMI to implement a “cost‐down, talent‐up” approach, which focuses on not only retaining existing key employees but also introducing new talent to lead the business while cutting costs. Findings – Stresses the importance of setting the right goals, restructuring at pace and integrating talent management. Reveals that EMI is now firmly on track to deliver the £200 million savings it had sought before reorganization. Practical implications – Argues that employers and HR teams must work to retain the core values embedded in the employer brand, not only when recruiting but also when making redundancies. Social implications – Spotlights the direct effect on a well‐known company of a major change in social customs – the way in which recorded music is distributed. Originality/value – Highlights how businesses must think carefully about their survival strategies, as cost cutting alone is rarely enough.
