Technology transfer to Asean : implications for transitional economies

Since the mid-1980s, many nations within the ASEAN such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, have embarked on a path of economic liberalization and reform on an unprecedented scale. This period has also coincided with a large influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the region from Japan and the Asian NIES (newly industrializing economies) as they seek to relocate their labour-intensive operations overseas. The paper inquires the contribution of technology transfer to economic performance of the ASEAN countries, to what extent has this been facilitated by the institutional and policy environment within ASEAN etc. (DÜI-Sen)
