The Case for Embedding ‘Activity Theory’ in a Web-Based Enterprise Course

This paper presents a study that critically evaluates the underpinning pedagogy of a Web-based course in entrepreneurship currently delivered by the University of Glamorgan. The study reviews the wider literature and joins the debate regarding the general effectiveness of formal courses in its ability to develop entrepreneurs. Against this backdrop, the paper offers a deliberation of whether activity theory (AT) as forwarded by Engeström is a viable alternative to the current pedagogical approach and can be successfully embedded into the course design and delivery strategies. The potential benefits to students might include a more effective means of entrepreneurial development and possibly a more appealing learning experience by introducing experiential learning and constructivism to the current learning programme. The findings suggest that some element of experiential learning would enhance the development programme. Current pedagogical approaches remain essentially didactic in nature. A Web-based course in enterprise structured round AT can potentially address this perceived shortfall by means of effective task design centred round role-play and simulation relating to scenarios commonly found in entrepreneurship practice.[...]
