The Contribution of the Federal Provinces to GDP
Regional accents have shifted over the extended cyclical boom of the last three years. While in 1988 and 1989 the Western provinces were the major beneficiaries of strong demand from Germany, the "Eastern region" (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) managed to catch up in 1990. Activity in that area was boosted by growth forces in manufacturing industry, energy generation, and tourism. The growth performance of Upper Austria and Styria was also above the national average, but the lead was stronger in real than in nominal values.
