This survey reviews the history of trade and investment between Cuba and the US. Aside from the embargo years, US trade and investment have been critical for Cuba. Short of protection for US sugar beet farmers, Cuba would have become a state of the US following the Spanish American War. Lifting the embargo promises re-emergence of the strong economic ties and a substantial boost to the regional economy including the Caribbean and the US Southeast
