The Impact of Personality Traits and Demographic Factors on Burnout Prevalence in Employees Working from Home in the Indian IT Industry
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between demographic variables (age and gender) and the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness) with burnout rates in remote work environments, specifically in the information technology industry. The study included 262 employees who work from home and were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and The Big Five Inventory (BFI). The results of the study indicated that there is a positive correlation between the personality trait of neuroticism and burnout rates among remote IT workers. It also indicated a negative correlation between the personality traits of openness to experience, agreeableness, extroversion, conscientiousness and burnout rates among IT workers. This finding suggests that individuals who score high on the neuroticism trait may be at greater risk of experiencing burnout in remote work environments. Moreover, the study found a significant difference in burnout experienced between age groups 21-40 years and 41-60 years, but no significant difference between burnout differences among male and female employees. This finding suggests that younger and older employees may experience burnout differently in remote work environments, and this difference should be taken into account when designing interventions to prevent or manage burnout in remote work environments. The present study adds to the growing body of literature on the relationship between personality, demographic variables, and burnout in remote work environments. The findings highlight the importance of considering individual differences in personality and age when designing interventions to prevent or manage burnout in remote work environments, particularly in the information technology industry
