The Research Productivity of Asian Universities and Research Institutes for the Growth of Nations

This study evaluates the research productivity of universities and research institutes in Asia based on publications in Science and Nature. We find that Chinese institutions dominate the league. The recent rise of China is largely attributed to international collaboration with prominent U.S. and European institutions. The IV estimation further indicates that scientific publications promote economic growth only through the development of advanced technologies. In addition, we find that the research contribution of universities is, in general, greater than that of research institutes
