The transverse viscomagnetic effect in N2 and N2-noble gas mixtures in the near hydrodynamic regime
The influence of a magnetic field on the shear viscosity of N2 and N2-noble gas mixtures was measured at 295 K in the moderately rarefied gas regime, where the mean free path is non-negligible. For all systems a similar pressure dependence was observed with the Knudsen number providing a universal scaling factor. For pure N2 it was found that the theory of Waldmann and Vestner describes the pressure dependence very well as long as the boundary layers are well separated (Knudsen number ⪅0.15).
