Toward a Sustainable Environment in the MENA : Is There Any Role of Energy and Natural Resource Rent?

This study examines the MENA region's environmental degradation from 1991-2020. Data was collected from the World Bank Development Indicators (WDI), Energy Information Association (EIA), and Global Footprint Network (GFN). The findings from the Augmented mean group method (AMG) show that technological advancement and renewable energy have a negative impact on environmental degradation in the MENA. The "halo" hypothesis, which holds that multinational corporations from developed countries can teach local businesses in MENA countries advanced knowledge and environmental practices, is supported by this study. The current study offers insightful information about both environmental preservation and the MENA economy. By identifying the economic sector that mostly contributes to damaging the environment, policymakers can develop targeted environmental policies to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change
