Trends in the structure of the labour force in three Asian countries : their implications for vulnerable segments of urban labour markets

This article analyses the "vulnerable segments" of the urban labour markets - meaning particularly the category of "unprotected wage labour" - in Indonesia, India and Pakistan. It reviews the "macro" evidence of population censuses and labour force surveys with the objective of tracing trends in the vulnerable segments of the labour market by comparison with protected wage work. The review shows a tendency for an increasing proportion of the labour force to be piled up in vulnerable types of employment. (DSE)
