I will try to make sense of this trend in this paper by formally showing how material growth increases the time spent working in the market while it reduces the time spent in gatherings, in sumposia, with others. Public discourse requires time, to read, think, and interact with others. It is also assisted by the presence of a public space, the agora, the corner cafe, bar, or tavern, as well as the presence of media that can provide fodder for debate.
