Underground coal gasification in operating mines and areas of high vulnerability (COGAR) : final report

COGAR was a research project that aims to assess the risk associated with UCG in operating mines and areas of high vulnerability. The Project commenced in July 2013 and was completed in accordance with the schedule in June 2016. The project was organized into work packages, each covering a technical component for study and ultimately feeding into last one where a synthesis of inputs was undertaken. The individual work packages were: • Data collection and interpretation where data/experiences were collected and site measurements carried out before, during and after UCG trials at EM Barbara and Wieczorek Colliery. The work comprises: measurements of parameters of rock mass surrounding georeactor and its quality, assessment of the influence of temperature on rock parameters, collection of data and laboratory test of groundwater, collection of data from air monitoring systems and its analysis. • Legal situation of UCG in EU-27 where regulatory/legal constrains were collected and analysed and thus recommendation for implementation of UCG were produced; • Computer simulation and numerical modelling of influence of UCG on environment which was dedicated to the simulation of geotechnical, hydrogeological, thermodynamic and ventilation situation during and after UCG trials; • Risk Assessment and recommendations which was dedicated to the development of control systems, risk assessment method and recommendations for UCG implementation in operating mines and areas of high vulnerability.
