Up-to-date Markers of Minitexts in English Educational Discourse
The objective of the work is to look into a most pertinent trend in educational discourse related to learning English as a foreign language, namely the use of miniformat speech materials (minitexts, both written and oral), which is gaining momentum in the wake of such trend in many other communicative registers. The authors lay the ground for analysing the use of educational minitexts as a reflection of a more general process of decrease in a typical human attention span observed with students of English today. The research uses methods of descriptive, semantic, cognitive and discourse analyses, since it is largely focused on the discursive, structural and sense characteristics of educational minitexts ranging from student’s book titles to authentic professionally orientated pieces.Proceeding from the definitions of the key notions under consideration (minitext, discourse, educational discourse, linguistic markers) the research further discloses the following markers of educational minitexts:- parameters of textuality - means of rhetorical impact - signs of denationalization (as part of English going global) - blending of different discourse types- components of conceptual sphere. The authors come to the conclusion that a certain specificity of modern educational materials lies in the twofold necessity for them to implement the learning purposes successfully: on the one hand, to be adequately perceived by recipients, on the other hand, to incorporate the material enough to give them the knowledge and to develop the skills they need. This is seen as a challenge for educators
