Using DEA to Evaluate the Effiency of Recently Established Turkish State Universities

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of new state universities in Turkey for 2009 by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In these calculations 24 state universities were used as decision-making units (DMU). We aim to analyze how efficient these universities in their work by using such input and output as the number of academicians, expenditures, number of papers published in indexed journals, number of undergraduate and graduate students, and number of graduated students in DEA. That 18 of 24 universities were found to be under the necessary level of efficiency and that the average total efficiency was 0.889. Only 6 of the 24 universities have a good score in terms of total efficiency. These efficiency scores suggest that these new universities need to improve their input-output efficiency management.
