Using Q methodology to open the "black box" of corporate governance

A longstanding focus on financial performance has left many corporate governance researchers looking for new research methods that can help move beyond “black boxed” understandings. This chapter promotes a critical approach to Q methodology (QM) as a way to help researchers develop deeper understandings in their work; like how boards work and how complex governance decisions - involving a variety of interests -are made. As mixed methods research, QM has a unique ability to blend both qualitative and quantitative data to associate meaning with individuals’ understandings and experience. Ultimately, I discuss how QM should be used by researchers to help move beyond “black boxed” understandings and help them illustrate a rich tapestry of perspectives in their CG research.
