Violent Conflicts and Their Termination

Against the backdrop of sobering statistics regarding conflict traps it is important to ask how the termination of a violent conflict can lead to a more sustainable peace? One crucial aspect lies in the impact of the termination of a conflict on the communities concerned. With special reference to intrastate conflicts in Africa, this chapter therefore assesses three different approaches to terminating violent conflicts – settlement, resolution and transformation – in order to explore how they link the termination of a conflict with long-term social change
