Wet deposition and atmospheric mercury monitoring in Sisal, Yucatán, México, as part of the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) : part 1 - report of 2013 results
In order to investigate the occurrence and trends of mercury in ambient air and precipitation worldwide, the European Commission supported the creation of the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS), a five-year project carried out between 2011 and 2015. GMOS combines the output of ground monitoring stations in different parts of the world, measurements taken in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, and airborne measurements. GMOS aims to plot the temporal and spatial distribution of mercury levels in ambient air and precipitation on land and water surfaces at different altitudes and latitudes around the world. This information will provide the data needed to validate and further develop regional and global atmospheric mercury models. These models shall predict the temporal variations and spatial distributions of atmospheric mercury, creating a solid basis for the future development and implementation of cross-border and regional abatement policies. The project involves 24 partners from around the world. The Joint Research Centre (JRC), in close cooperation with the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), manages the sampling site in Mexico. This report describes the terrestrial monitoring data and results of the year 2013 gathered from Sisal, Yucatàn, Mexico.
