Where to Drink? A Holistic Spatial Review of the Optimal Bar/Pub Location in Tel Aviv

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful tools that allow us to analyze and understand complex spatial data. In this study, we will use the GIS platform QGIS to evaluate the potential success of a new bar in Tel Aviv by examining four key variables: pedestrian streets, population density, kindergartens, and legal hours of operation. These variables will allow us to determine the optimal location for a bar/pub in Tel Aviv in the various ways discussed in this paper.Tel Aviv is world-renowned for its nightlife because of the large volume of young residents and travelers (Chart 1, Appendix). By using GIS files and statistical data, we aim to provide entrepreneurs and potential bar owners with a data-driven method for making informed decisions about where to open a new bar and profit from the vibrant culture of Tel Aviv using the variables previously mentioned.Though there are multiple bars already contributing to Tel Aviv's vibrant nightlife, we seek to define the optimal location to open a new one. The factors we chose to consider are population density per statistical area, legal hours of operation, number of kindergartens/schools in the 100m vicinity, and pedestrian streets in the area. It is important to note that the locations consisting of kindergartens/schools represent a demographic that is not part of our potential customer base by law and general consumer behavior. Plus, having kindergartens/schools near a bar/pub can cause discrepancies and a lack of general comfort for both the students and the pub-goers.The goals of our spatial analysis are twofold. First, we aim to give entrepreneurs a statistical and research-based strategy for deciding where to open their next bar business venture. Second, we aim to serve the general population by providing data and research to help identify areas where quality circumstances exist for the consumer to enjoy their bar setting. We based this research on population density metrics and municipal zoning regulations that make the conditions for a bar ideal (e.g., low levels of kindergartens/schools, reasonable hours of operation such as late closing times, the availability of pedestrian streets to allow for a large congregation of customers without the dangers of heavy traffic congestion, and a high population density to allow for a large foundation of potential customers). By analyzing these variables, we can identify the optimal location for a new bar based on factors that are known to impact business success
