Why Indian talent is going to waste

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explain why India is failing to capitalize on the talent available in the country and considers how reversing this could boost not only employment but also growth. Design/methodology/approach – The paper focuses on national and regional governments' schemes and plans and how they have largely failed over time. Findings – The paper describes how the centralization of responsibility for unemployment is essential and considers the need for accurate statistics on joblessness and the relationship between poverty and illiteracy. Practical implications – The paper emphasizes the need for government to do more to boost potential growth sectors of the economy, such as information technology and tourism. Social implications – The paper highlights the value of quality education and the need to get more children into school – especially in rural areas. Originality/value – The paper focuses on ways in which India can increase employment and, through that, economic growth.
