Why the Law Is on Pfizer's Side when It Comes to Making a Profit from the Pandemic
This Comment was published on The Conversation UK. It argues that Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies involved in the production of COVID-19 vaccines are entitled to profit from this venture. Rather than being unethical which is how some have described pharmaceutical companies that profited from the sale of vaccines, this Comment argues that the ethics of 'big pharma' could only be impugned if they chose not to manufacture vaccines after weighing-up the significant financial costs and the potential reputational costs if their respective cures failed. In developing a vaccine for the benefit of society at large and in making a profit as a result, Pfizer and others have done exactly what the entity conception of the corporation requires. That is to acknowledge the contribution of every stakeholder that forms the corporate enterprise and reward them accordingly
