Work organisation, technology and working conditions

European industrial society is rapidly transforming itself into a knowledge society and this has implications for all citizens of the European Union. This report looks at the impact of the growing use of machine and computer technology on the work environment and the quality of working conditions. What are the implications for workers' health, for their skills requirements and their work motivation? Is the increase in the level of worker autonomy experienced by workers counterbalanced by higher degrees of stress and health problems? The report describes the relationship between technology, work organisation patterns and working conditions and identifies trends and changes in both work situations and use of technology.
