Workers with Invisible Disabilities : The Case Study of Family Mediterranean Fever (FMF) עובדים עם מוגבלות בלתי נראית: קדחת ים תיכונית

מטרת המחקר לבחון את אופן השתלבותם של אנשים עם מוגבלות בלתי נראית בשוק העבודה באמצעות מקרה המבחן של חולים בקדחת ים תיכונית. הקדחת הים תיכונית היא מחלה כרונית ללא נראות חיצונית תמידית אשר מספר החולים בה נמוך באופן יחסי למחלות כרוניות רבות אחרות. המחלה זכתה עד כה בהכרה חלקית בלבד של הממסד ואיננה מופיעה בספר הליקויים של המוסד לביטוח לאומי. המחקר בוחן את הגורמים המסייעים ומקשים על השתלבותם של אנשים החולים בקדחת ים תיכונית בשוק העבודה, כמו גם את החלטתם לחשוף את דבר מחלתם או להשאירה סמויה מהעין. לצורך המחקר נערכו ראיונות חצי מובנים עם עשרים מרואיינים בגילאי העבודה המתמודדים עם קדחת ים תיכונית. מהמחקר והראיונות עולים מספר תובנות. ראשית, מהראיונות עולה הרצון של עובדים ללקיחת אחריות של המדינה והשתתפות בעלויות הכרוכות בהעסקתם ובפרט בתשלומים הנוגעים לדמי מחלה לשכירים ולעצמאים. שנית, מהראיונות עולה החשיבות המיוחדת שבהיכרות של המעסיקים עם המחלה. לתפיסתם של העובדים, למעסיקים יש את הכלים הנדרשים לצורך התאמת מקום העבודה לתעסוקת עובדים עם קדחת ים תיכונית. שלישית, מהראיונות עולה החשיבות שבהיכרות העובדים עצמם עם המחלה. בחלק מהראיונות העובדים העידו על תחושת שחרור שכרוכה ב"יציאה מארון" המוגבלות והשתייכות לקהילה החדשה שהולכת ומתגבשת – קהילת האנשים עם קדחת ים תיכונית.This article studies the integration of individuals with invisible disabilities in the Israeli labor market through a case study of workers with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). FMF is a chronic disease without any permanent external visible effects. The number of FMF patients in Israel (as well as elsewhere) is relatively low compared to many other chronic diseases. FMF disease has so far received only partial recognition from Israel’s National Insurance Institute. The study examines the factors that assist people with FMF to integrate into the labor market and the challenges that workers with FMF face. The study also examines the decision of workers with FMF to disclose their illness or to leave hidden. For the purpose of the study, twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with FMF patients (aged 28-59). A number of insights emerge from the research and interviews. First, the interviewees expressed a desire that the state will take more responsibility with regard to the costs involved in their employment, particularly in payments of sick days to employees and self-employees alike. Second, the study emphasizes the importance of employers’ familiarity with the disease. According to the study, employers – who are familiar with FMF – have the necessary tools to adapt the workplace to employment of workers with FMF. Third, the study shows the importance of employees’ familiarity with FMF. In some of the interviews, the workers attested to a sense of liberation that comes with coming out of the closet of disability and to a sense of belonging to the new community that is emerging - the community of people with FMF
