On improving the resolution of the recruitment patterns of fishes
Moreau, J.; Cuende, F.X. - In: Fishbyte 9 (1991) 1, pp. 45-46
It is proposed that the "recruitment pattern" routine of the ELEFAN II program can be modified to allow, in addition to length-frequency data, the use of "restructured" data files. An example, based on Oreochromis niloticus in Lake Itasy, Madagascar, is given to show that this results in...

Correction to the Beverton and Holt Z-estimator for truncated catch length-frequency distributions
Ault, J.S.; Ehrhardt, N.M. - In: Fishbyte 9 (1991) 1, pp. 37-39
A method for estimating the instantaneous mortality rate (Z) is presented which was developed from a truncated equation for average length. The model has zero bias at equilibrium, but has no explicit solution for Z so that its solution requires a numerical method.

Preliminary estimates of growth parameters for three commercial bivalve species of Peru (Gari solida, Anlacomya ater and Semele solida)
Urban, H.J. - In: Fishbyte 9 (1991) 1, pp. 4-6
The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were estimated, mainly from size-frequency data, for three commercially exploited Peruvian bivalves, Gari solida, Aulacomya ater and Semele solida, collected by divers from "Bahia de Independencia", Pisco, Peru from November 1986 to September...

A note on the development of a new software package, the FAO-ICLARM stock assessment tools (FiSAT)
Pauly, D.; Sparre, P. - In: Fishbyte 9 (1991) 1, pp. 47-49
A brief narrative is given of the background of a new FAO-ICLARM software for (mainly length-based) fish stock assessment, the FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tools or "FiSAT" package, integrating the ICLARM's Compleat ELEFAN, FAO's LFSA and various other routines, and which is to be released in...

Example estimations of yield and fishery profit when few data are available
Sanders, M.J. - In: Fishbyte 9 (1991) 1, pp. 12-15
Very preliminary bioeconomic assessments are reported in respect to fishery situation in Kenya. In the case of the shrimp fishery, it is concluded that the contemporary trawler fleet is substantially in excess of that required to maximise fishery profits. The second situation concerns the...
