Inference in cognitive maps
Wellman, Michael P. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 36 (1994) 2, pp. 137-148
Cognitive mapping is a qualitative decision modeling technique developed over twenty years ago by political scientists, which continues to see occasional use in social science and decision-aiding applications. In this paper, I show how cognitive maps can be viewed in the context of more recent...

Numerical methods for linear boundary value problems based on Feyman–Kac representations
Souza de Cursi, J.E. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 36 (1994) 1, pp. 1-16
We present simulation methods for the numerical approximation of some linear boundary value problems involving Laplace's operator. The methods exposed are based on Feyman–Kac representations of the solutions. The methods are compared to each other and to finite element solution in some simple...

A case based reasoning approach to mesh specification for adaptive finite element analysis
Hurley, Neil - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 36 (1994) 4, pp. 381-388
In this paper the application of an Artificial Intelligence paradigm called Case Based Reasoning (CBR) to the issue of mesh specification for adaptive finite element analysis is discussed. It is argued that CBR can provide greater flexibility than the traditional rule-based approach, permitting...

Quantum Hamiltonians from level statistics via dressing transformations
Ramani, A.; Grammaticos, B.; Caurier, E. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 4, pp. 451-459
We use the dressing transformation in order to reconstruct one-dimensional Hamiltonians starting from their spectra. Whenever the given spectrum departs from oscillator-like local behaviour the resulting potential is fractal. An estimate of this fractal dimension is presented.

Concepts of TRIFIT, a flexible software environment for problems in two space dimensions
Wijngaart, Rob F. van der - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 6, pp. 505-525
A general-purpose package for the solution of problems in two space dimensions, both steady and unsteady, is described. The type of grid used is unstructured triangular. Emphasis is placed on concepts underlying the package, rather than on implementation.

On the asymptotic behavior of solutions to nonlinear, dispersive, dissipative wave equations
Bona, Jerry; Promislow, Keith; Wayne, Gene - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 4, pp. 265-277
The renormalization techniques for determining the long-time asymptotics of nonlinear parabolic equations pioneered by Bricmont, Kupiainen and Lin are shown to be effective in analyzing nonlinear wave equations featuring both dissipation and dispersion. These methods allow us to recover recent...

Integrable discrete systems and numerical integrators
Grammaticos, B.; Dorizzi, B. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 4, pp. 341-352
We present an analysis of various integration schemes which are applied to the numerical integration of, first, a one-dimensional Hamiltonian system and, second, Painlevé equations I and II. Both systems are well-known integrable ones. Integrable integrators are best suited for the simulation...

Task structure: a vocabulary for integrating numerical methods and knowledge-based systems
Sundaram, Ananthapadmanaban; McDowell, James K.; … - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 36 (1994) 4, pp. 337-346
Often Expert Systems (ES) or Knowledge-based Systems (KBS) are described in term of their implementation details. If the complex problem solving activities captured in such systems are viewed as a type of information processing ask then an alternative vocabulary of description is possible which...

Simulation of variable delays in material transport models
Zenger, Kai; Ylinen, Raimo - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 1, pp. 57-72
The time for material to pass through a plug flow vessel is modelled by a delay function. If the flow rate is time-variable, the varying delay is difficult to calculate analytically even for general test functions of the flow rate. In this paper, the properties of delay functions are studied...

Approximation of the dynamical model of fixed bed reactors via a singular perturbation approach
Dochain, D.; Bouaziz, B. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 37 (1994) 2, pp. 165-172
In this paper, we propose to study the dynamics of fixed bed reactors with axial dispersion in the general case of a non-isothermal process involving N components and M reactions. It will be shown by using singular perturbation that for large dispersion coefficient values, the fixed bed reactor...
