Energy-based smoothing of data
Loe, Kia-Fock - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 3, pp. 271-277
Given a set of large noisy data, a technique which generates line segments and provides an optimal smooth connection of the line segments to form a smoothing function is proposed. In this technique data are recursively subdivided into two subsets, means of the data in each subset are computed...

Parallel simulation of real-time systems via the Standard Clock approach
Ho, Yu-Chi; Cassandras, C.G.; Makhlouf, M. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 1, pp. 33-41
In this note we extend the Standard Clock methodology to real-time discrete event dynamic systems where analytically complex features such as job priorities and interrupt mechanism can be handled in an efficient way for the parallel exploration of the performance surface.

An adaptive incremental approach for the solution of convex programming models
Mahmoud, F.F.; Al-Saffar, A.K.; Hassan, K.A. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 6, pp. 501-508
A proposed approach for the solution of convex programming problems is introduced. It is based on an incremental procedure and the maximum number of increments does not exceed the total number of constraints. The details of the algorithm are given and an illustrative example is presented.

Application of a collocation method for simulation of distributed parameter bioreactors
Tali-Maamar, N.; Damak, T.; Babary, J.-P.; Nihtilä, M.T. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 4, pp. 303-319
An orthogonal collocation method which belongs to the class of functional approximation methods of partial differential equations (PDEs) is applied in two distributed parameter bioreactor models. The models represent microbial growth and substrate consumption in a continuous-flow tube reactor....

Symmetric capillary surface in a cube
Mittelmann, Hans D. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 2, pp. 139-152
Numerical experiments are described by which stable capillary surfaces are calculated. The surfaces in question are determined by the following data: the container is a cube in space; the contact angle is 70°; the Bond number is zero; only symmetric configurations are taken into consideration.

Babbage and cryptography. Or, the mystery of Admiral Beaufort's cipher
Franksen, Ole Immanuel - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 4, pp. 327-367
If Charles Babbage had written the book (The Philosophy of Decyphering) he planned to do, he would have been the first to publish a routine solution of the Vigenère cipher, the “chiffre indéchiffrable” of more than two and a half centuries. For before any known publication, and by a wide...

A differential-difference equation for a KdV-MKdV equation
Taha, Thiab R. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 6, pp. 509-512
In this paper a differential-difference equation is derived by methods related to the inverse scattering transform (IST), which has as its limiting form the nonlinear partial differential equation ut+6αuux+6βu2ux + uxxx=0. It is shown that the differential-difference equations which have as...

Stability of multiobjective nonlinear programming problems with fuzzy parameters
Osman, Mohamed S.; El-Banna, Abou-Zaid H. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 4, pp. 321-326
This paper deals with multiobjective nonlinear programming problems with fuzzy parameters in the objective functions. These fuzzy parameters are characterized by fuzzy numbers. The existing results concerning the qualitative analysis of some basic notions in parametric nonlinear programming...

A predictor-corrector phase-fitted method for y″ = f(x, y)
Simos, T.E. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 35 (1993) 2, pp. 153-159
A predictor-corrector method with algebraic order 4 is developed in this paper. Any stage of the method has phase-lag of order infinite. Numerical results indicate that this new method is much more accurate compared with previous methods of various orders.
