Unified dual optimisation and algorithms for image reconstruction and spectral estimation
Goutis, C.E. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 623-634
Taking the linear transformations of the image into a finite number of one dimensional (1-D) continuous functions as constraints, a new dual optimization method is introduced for formally deriving existing and new models for linear systems. The results are applied to Tomography and Spectral...

Analysis of multirate sampled-data systems by block-pulse functions
Chen, W.L.; Wu, S.G. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 503-510
The set of block-pulse functions is applied to analyze the multirate sampled-data control systems. A recursive formula, which is convenient for computer computation, is obtained to compute the output of the system. One example is given at the last section to show the results obtained in this paper.

1-D and 2-D algorithms for orthogonal transformations
Corinthios, Michael J.; Geadah, Youssef - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 441-452
Algorithms for orthoganal transformations of one-dimensional and two-dimensional signals are presented. These algorithms are well suited for the implementation of parallel high speed VLSI signal processors. In particular they are characterized by their constant geometry accessing as well as...

Image data compression by the discrete cosine transform
Cappellini, Vito; Del Re, Enrico - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 599-608
The application of the Discrete Cosine Transform to image data compression is presented. In particular a fast algorithm is described for an efficient implementation of the transform. Both zonal and threshold sampling methods are considered and their performance is evaluated. Also a comparison of...

Applications of generalized laguerre functions
Clement, P.R. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 541-550
A reasonably extensive characterization of the structures of various communication systems using generalized Laguerre functions is presented. Emphasis is placed on the analytical properties of these functions coupled with modern numerical techniques. Three aspects are presented: (1) the...

Orthogonal expansions and the causality law
Harmuth, Henning F. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 519-529
The use of orthogonal expansions leads sometimes to results that clearly do not satisfy the causality law. The best known example is the filtering of a step function by a lowpass filter with idealized frequency cut-off. The Fourier transform yields in this case an output function starting at the...

A micro-simulation model for pedestrian flows
Gipps, P.G.; Marksjö, B. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 2, pp. 95-105
The ability to predict how changes in the walking environment will affect the pedestrian flow is important to the designers of buildings and other constructed facilities. These changes can act on an individual pedestrian directly by diverting him from his preferred route, and indirectly through...

A data-flow multiprocessor architecture for the transform coding of regularly decomposed images
Alexandridis, N.A.; Tsanakas, P.D.; Konstantinidou, S.V. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 5, pp. 609-622
An architecture for the parallel implementation of an orthogonal transform of images is presented. Images are preprocessed by the “regular decomposition” procedure and converted into a quad-tree representation. The orthogonal transformation is performed progressivelly by adjusting to the...

Coefficient control for a distributed parabolic system
Humeau, J.P.; Grolleau, M. - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 1, pp. 1-17
A simulation study for the optimal control of a system described by a set of two coupled parabolic equations is presented. The control is a function of time and appears as a coefficient in the state equation. The optimality conditions lead to a two points boundary value problem which is solved...

Analysis and simulation of new approximation equations for boundary-layer flow on curved surfaces
Kleinstreuer, Clement; Eghlima, Ali - In: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (MATCOM) 27 (1985) 4, pp. 307-325
An accurate and computationally efficent simulation of viscous flow fields exhibiting streamline curvature effects is important for the basic understanding and optimal design of a variety of mechanical systems. Examples include flow part airfoils, marine crafts, and automobiles or flow in...
