Productive disasters? Evidence from European firm level data
Leiter, Andrea M.; Oberhofer, Harald; Raschky, Paul A. - 2007
This paper examines the impact of floods on firms' capital accumulation, employment growth and productivity by using a difference-in-difference approach and considering firms' asset structure. We find evidence that companies in flooding regions show higher growth of total assets and employment...

FDI versus exports. Substitutes or complements? A three nation model and empirical evidence
Oberhofer, Harald; Pfaffermayr, Michael - 2007
There are two main options for companies to serve foreign markets: exports and foreign direct investment (FDI). Based on the Helpman, Melitz and Yeaple (2004) model for two host countries this paper derives a clear theoretical prediction for the decision between both strategies. A bivariate...

Additive models with random scaling factors: Applications to modeling price response functions
Wechselberger, Peter; Lang, Stefan; Steiner, Winfried J. - 2007
We discuss inference for additive models with random scaling factors. The additive effects are of the form (1+g)f(z) where f is a nonlinear function of the continuous covariate z modeled by P(enalized)-splines and 1+g is a random scaling factor. Additionally, monotonicity constraints on the...

The economic consequences of a Tobin tax: An experimental analysis
Hanke, Michael; Huber, Jürgen; Kirchler, Michael; … - 2007
The effects of a Tobin tax on foreign exchange markets have long been disputed. We present an experiment with currency trading on two markets, where either none, one, or both markets are taxed. Our results confirm the hitherto undisputed issues: a tax reduces trading volume, shifts market share...

Individuals and teams in UMTS-license auctions
Sutter, Matthias; Kocher, Martin; Strauß, Sabine - 2007
We examine bidding behaviour of individuals and teams in an experimental auction resembling UMTS-license auctions. Even though in reality teams were largely involved in those auctions, experimental studies on bidding in auctions have so far relied on individual bidders. Our results show that...

Barriers to technology adoption, international R&D spillovers and growth
Crespo Cuaresma, Jesus; Foster, Neil; Scharler, Johann - 2007
Panel data is used to investigate the extent of R&D spillovers between OECD countries, and the importance of barriers to technology adoption in affecting the benefits of such spillovers. Our results indicate that countries with less regulated goods and labour markets benefit more from foreign R&D.

Network formation with endogenous decay
Feri, Francesco - 2007
This paper considers a model of economic network characterized by an endogenous architecture and frictions in the relations among agents as described in Bala and Goyal (2000). We propose a similar network model with the difference that frictions in the relations among agents are endogenous....

Charity hazard : A real hazard to natural disaster insurance?
Raschky, Paul A.; Weck-Hannemann, Hannelore - 2007
After the flooding in 2002 European governments provided billions of Euros of financial assistance to their citizens. Although there is no doubt that solidarity and some sort of assistance is reasonable, the question arises why these damages were not sufficiently insured. One explanation why...

An almost-too-late warning mechanism for currency crises
Crespo Cuaresma, Jesus; Slacik, Tomas - 2007
We propose exploiting the term structure of relative interest rates to obtain estimates of changes in the timing of a currency crisis as perceived by market participants. Our indicator can be used to evaluate the relative probability of a crisis occurring in one week as compared to a crisis...

Forecasting euro exchange rates: How much does model averaging help?
Crespo Cuaresma, Jesus - 2007
We analyze the performance of Bayesian model averaged exchange rate forecasts for euro/US dollar, euro/Japanese yen, euro/Swiss franc and euro/British pound rates using weights based on the out-of-sample predictive likelihood. The paper also presents a simple stratified sampling procedure in the...
