Leonard, William R.; Spencer, Gary J.; Galloway, Victoria A. - 2011
Human health status in Russia has declined sharply over the last decade. The massive social changes that have taken place since the fall of the Soviet Union have resulted in increasing morbidity and mortality rates. However, relatively little information is available on the changes in health and...

Confessions of a College Non-Economizer
Leonard, William Patrick - In: Econ Journal Watch 6 (2009) 3, pp. 359-363
The writer observes that the fundamental economic principles taught in our higher education classrooms have not found their way into our colleges’ administration suites. Administrators rely on enrollment and tuition increases to balance their budgets. Although there are some...

Precursors to overnutrition: The effects of household market food expenditures on measures of body composition among Tsimane' adults in lowland Bolivia
Rosinger, Asher; Tanner, Susan; Leonard, William R. - In: Social Science & Medicine 92 (2013) C, pp. 53-60
Nutrition transitions are characterized by shifts in diet and activity levels that lead to changes in weight and body fatness over a relatively short time. Research has linked these nutritional shifts to socio-economic factors, including wealth and income. However, few studies have examined...

Why no adult stunting penalty or height premium?: Estimates from native Amazonians in Bolivia
Godoy, Ricardo; Magvanjav, Oyunbileg; Nyberg, Colleen; … - In: Economics & Human Biology 8 (2010) 1, pp. 88-99
Among adults of industrial nations, growth stunting (<-2 SD height Z score) is associated with worse indicators of adult well-being (e.g., income). Does adult stunting also inflict private costs in traditional societies? Adult stunting penalties or height premiums might only emerge when traditional societies modernize. Here we estimate the association between adult stunting and indicators of adult well-being using data from a panel study in progress among the Tsimane', a foraging-farming society of native Amazonians in Bolivia. Subjects included 248 women and 255 men >=age 22 measured annually during 5 consecutive years (2002-2006). Nine outcomes (wealth, monetary income, illness, access to credit, mirth, schooling, math skills, plant knowledge, forest clearance) were regressed separately against a stunting...</-2>

Does civilization cause discontentment among indigenous Amazonians? Test of empirical data from the Tsimane' of Bolivia
Godoy, Ricardo; Zeinalova, Elizabeth; Reyes-García, … - In: Journal of Economic Psychology 31 (2010) 4, pp. 587-598
Despite the pervasiveness of international trade, the effects of trade opening on the psyche have received scant attention. We present three hypotheses about the likely effects of trade opening on the following five dimensions of the psyche: mirth (smiles), anger, addiction, stress, and regret....

Godoy, Ricardo; Reyes-García, Victoria; Vadez, Vincent; … - In: Ecological Economics 68 (2009) 6, pp. 1864-1871
The Amazon rain forest harbors some of the world's richest biological diversity. During the twentieth century, two types of actors cleared that forest: native Amazonians and outside encroachers. Of the two actors, we know more about what drives outside encroachers to clear forest than about what...
