Neighborhoods, Obesity and Diabetes –-- A Randomized Social Experiment
Duncan, Greg J.; Katz, Lawrence F.; Kessler, Ronald; … - Department of Economics, Harvard University - 2011
Background: The question of whether neighborhood environment contributes directly to the development of obesity and diabetes remains unresolved. The study reported on here uses data from a social experiment to assess the association of randomly assigned variation in neighborhood conditions with...

Zeng, Wu; Eisenberg, Dan T.A.; Jovel, Karla Rubio; … - In: Economics & Human Biology 11 (2013) 2, pp. 227-235
This paper examines three morphological indicators measuring obesity among a native Amazonian population of foragers-farmers in Bolivia (Tsimane’) and estimates the associations between them and standard covariates of obesity (e.g., socioeconomic status [SES]). We collected annual data from...

The high price of debt: Household financial debt and its impact on mental and physical health
Sweet, Elizabeth; Nandi, Arijit; Adam, Emma K.; McDade, … - In: Social Science & Medicine 91 (2013) C, pp. 94-100
Household financial debt in America has risen dramatically in recent years. While there is evidence that debt is associated with adverse psychological health, its relationship with other health outcomes is relatively unknown. We investigate the associations of multiple indices of financial debt...

Adolescents' expectations for the future predict health behaviors in early adulthood
McDade, Thomas W.; Chyu, Laura; Duncan, Greg J.; Hoyt, … - In: Social Science & Medicine 73 (2011) 3, pp. 391-398
Health-related behaviors in adolescence establish trajectories of risk for obesity and chronic degenerative diseases, and they represent an important pathway through which socio-economic environments shape patterns of morbidity and mortality. Most behaviors that promote health involve making...

Why no adult stunting penalty or height premium?: Estimates from native Amazonians in Bolivia
Godoy, Ricardo; Magvanjav, Oyunbileg; Nyberg, Colleen; … - In: Economics & Human Biology 8 (2010) 1, pp. 88-99
Among adults of industrial nations, growth stunting (<-2 SD height Z score) is associated with worse indicators of adult well-being (e.g., income). Does adult stunting also inflict private costs in traditional societies? Adult stunting penalties or height premiums might only emerge when traditional societies modernize. Here we estimate the association between adult stunting and indicators of adult well-being using data from a panel study in progress among the Tsimane', a foraging-farming society of native Amazonians in Bolivia. Subjects included 248 women and 255 men >=age 22 measured annually during 5 consecutive years (2002-2006). Nine outcomes (wealth, monetary income, illness, access to credit, mirth, schooling, math skills, plant knowledge, forest clearance) were regressed separately against a stunting...</-2>
