On the interpretation of instrumental variables in the presence of specification errors : a causal comment
Raunig, Burkhard - In: Econometrics : open access journal 5 (2017) 3, pp. 1-6
Swamy et al. (2015) argue that valid instruments cannot exist when a structural model is misspecified. This note shows that this is not true in general. In simple examples valid instruments can exist and can help to estimate parameters of interest.

Identification and efficiency bounds for the average match function under conditionally exogenous matching
Graham, Bryan S.; Imbens, Guido W.; Ridder, Geert - 2016
Consider two heterogenous populations of agents who, when matched, jointly produce an output, Y. For example, teachers and classrooms of students together produce achievement, parents raise children, whose life outcomes vary in adulthood, assembly plant managers and workers produce a certain...

Minimum wage and employment: Escaping the parametric straitjacket
Cabras, Stefano; Fidrmuc, Jan; de Dios Tena Horrillo, Juan - 2016
Parametric regression models are often not flexible enough to capture the true relationships as they tend to rely on arbitrary identification assumptions. Using the UK Labor Force Survey, the authors estimate the causal effect of national minimum wage (NMW) increases on the probability of job...

"Randomisation bias" in the medical literature: A review
Sianesi, Barbara - 2016
Randomised controlled or clinical trials (RCTs) are generally viewed as the most reliable method to draw causal … inference as to the effects of a treatment, as they should guarantee that the individuals being compared differ only in terms of … causal model. This 'no randomisation bias' assumption is generally untestable but if violated would undermine the causal …

Design and Analysis of Experiments in Networks: Reducing Bias from Interference
Eckles, Dean; Karrer, Brian; Ugander, Johan - In: Journal of Causal Inference 5 (2016) 1
Abstract Estimating the effects of interventions in networks is complicated due to interference, such that the outcomes for one experimental unit may depend on the treatment assignments of other units. Familiar statistical formalism, experimental designs, and analysis methods assume the absence...

Predicting the Direction of Causal Effect Based on an Instrumental Variable Analysis: A Cautionary Tale
Burgess, Stephen; Small, Dylan S. - In: Journal of Causal Inference 4 (2016) 1, pp. 49-59
Abstract An instrumental variable can be used to test the causal null hypothesis that an exposure has no causal effect on the outcome, by assessing the association between the instrumental variable and the outcome. Under additional assumptions, an instrumental variable can be used to estimate...
