Hillesheim, Inga; Mechtel, Mario - In: Journal of Economic Psychology 34 (2013) C, pp. 61-77
We test concerns for relative standing with respect to private consumption, income, leisure, savings, and personal characteristics, using data from a classroom survey. Our results show highest degrees of positionality for personal characteristics and income. In order to explain positionality, we...

Bounded rationality and social interaction in negotiating a climate agreement
Gsottbauer, Elisabeth; Bergh, Jeroen den - In: International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law … 13 (2013) 3, pp. 225-249
An agreement on climate change mitigation hinges on large-scale international cooperation. Rational agents are supposed to consider the cost and benefits of cooperation, which then determine their negotiation positions. Behavioral economics provides experimental evidence that decision-making in...

Status Quo Effects in Fairness Games: Reciprocal Responses to Acts of Commission vs. Acts of Omission
Cox, James C.; Servátka, Maroš; Vadovic, Radovan - Department of Economics and Finance, College of … - 2013
Both the law and culture make a central distinction between acts of commission that overturn the status quo and acts of omission that uphold it. In everyday life acts of commission often elicit stronger reciprocal responses than do acts of omission. In this paper we compare reciprocal responses...

The external validity of giving in the dictator game
Franzen, Axel; Pointner, Sonja - In: Experimental Economics 16 (2013) 2, pp. 155-169
We investigate the external validity of giving in the dictator game by using the misdirected letter technique in a within-subject design. First, subjects participated in standard dictator games (double blind) conducted in labs in two different studies. Second, after four to five weeks (study 1)...

Group identity and relation-specific investment: An experimental investigation
Morita, Hodaka; Servátka, Maroš - In: European Economic Review 58 (2013) C, pp. 95-109
The hold-up problem has played a central role in the study of firm boundaries, which is a fundamental element of the economic study of organizations. We study a previously unexplored mechanism by which integration between two parties could mitigate the problem. Based on the social identity...

Accepting zero in the ultimatum game does not reflect selfish preferences
Staffiero, Gianandrea; Exadaktylos, Filippos; Espín, … - In: Economics Letters 121 (2013) 2, pp. 236-238
We show that subjects who set their minimum acceptable offer to zero in an ultimatum game are the most generous players in a dictator game. This finding challenges the interpretation of the acceptance of low offers as payoff-maximizing behavior.

Heterogeneous treatment effects and mechanisms in information-based environmental policies: Evidence from a large-scale field experiment
Ferraro, Paul J.; Miranda, Juan José - In: Resource and Energy Economics 35 (2013) 3, pp. 356-379
Policymakers often rely on non-pecuniary, information-based programs to achieve social objectives. Using data from a water conservation information campaign implemented as a randomized controlled trial, we estimate heterogeneous household responses. Understanding such heterogeneity is important...
