They indicate the origin of a citation in the text or as a footnote (e.g.: Miller, 2010, p. 43).
Some styles make a difference between quotations (s. ...) and paraphrase (cf. ...). Many styles do not make this distinction.
The reference in text refers to a single source in the reference list. If you use more than one work from a person from one year, put an a, b, ... behind the year. (e.g.: Miller, 2010a, p. 43)
