ESF Exploratory Workshop on "Boxing or Dancing? The changing role of Unions in Europe in light of the financial crisis"
The tertiarisation of jobs, migration, industrial change and globalization have led to a steady decline in union membership in recent decades which put unions at risk of losing their role as important player in the labour market. The financial and economic crisis gives unions the chance to revive and reinvent themselves. Unions have to decide which side to take on globalization and hence, whether unions will stand their ground as leading labour market actors remains an open question. Keywords: Financial crisis; Union Membership; European Integration; Wage Effects; Employment Effects; Bargaining Power.
