A simple method is given to calculate the multivariate process capability index Cp * as defined by Taam et al. (1993) and discussed by Kotz & Johnson (1993). It is shown that using this index is equivalent to using the smallest univariate Cp -value to determine the capability of a process.

We describe a computer intensive method for linear dimension reduction which minimizes the classification error directly. Simulated annealing Bohachevsky et al (1986) is used to solve this problem. The classification error is determined by an exact integration. We avoid distance or scatter...

The properties of Cpmk in the presence of asymmetric specification limits are discussed. It is shown that Cpmk tends to zero as the process variation increases and vice versa. Furthermore, if the process variation is small, Cpmk has its maximum near the target value but the maximum moves towards...

Aiming at optimal prediction of the correct note corresponding to a vocal time series we trained a classification algorithm on the basis of parts of interpretations of Tochter Zion (Händel) and tested the algorithm on the remaining parts. As classification algorithm we use a radial basis...

Sometimes one may be confronted with classification problems where classes are constituted of several subclasses that possess different distributions and therefore destroy accurate models of the entire classes as one similar group. An issue is modelling via local models of several subclasses. In...

Despite its age, the Linear Discriminant Analysis performs well even in situations where the underlying premises like normally distributed data with constant covariance matrices over all classes are not met. It is, however, a global technique that does not regard the nature of an individual...

One serious problem in deep-hole drilling is the formation of a dynamic disturbance called spiralling which causes holes with several lobes. Since such lobes are a severe impairment of the bore hole quality the formation of spiralling has to be prevented. Gessesse et al. [2] explain spiralling...

This paper describes an approach for selecting instances in regression problems in the cases where observations x are readily available, but obtaining labels y is hard. Given a database of observations, an algorithm inspired by statistical design of experiments and kernel methods is presented...

This article comments on a frequency estimator which was proposed by [6] and shows empirically that it exhibits a much larger mean squared error than a well known frequency estimator by [8]. It is demonstrated that by using a heuristical adjustment [2] the performance can be greatly improved....

This paper investigates the use of Design of Experiments in observational studies in order to select informative observations and features for classification. D-optimal plans are searched for in existing data and based on these plans the variables most relevant for classification are determined....
