A Constructive Heuristic Approach in Multi-Objective Container Loading Optimization Problem Using Practical Instances

The globalization of world economy intensified the growth of containerized transportation since decades which shows several benefits of reducing the cost and damage of potential goods, consequently, plays an eminent role in intermodal trading which can prolong economic development. Due to its enhancement, the operational efficiency of loading problem needs to be improved considering the practical instances. This paper utilizes the optimization of real-life packing and loading problem considering multi-objective instances faced by the logistics companies and modern industries by satisfying some practical constraints such as weight capacity, boundary crossing constraints, stability constraints, non-overlapping constraints, and orientation constraints. The target is to maximize the total volume and weight utilization of the cargo to ensure safety and facilitate cargo handling. This paper tackles these constraints jointly on practical instances using a constructive heuristic algorithm based on layer building approach to solve the problem in an acceptable time for both fragile and non-fragile material loading. The result shows the capability of finding satisfactory and realistic solutions in less computation time. The integer programming model is presented to validate the use of the proposed approach
