After Shocks : Exploring the Relationships between Transitional Justice and Resilience in Post-Conflict Societies

This chapter considers the potential relationships between transitional justice and resilience in post-conflict settings. It begins by reviewing the uses of the concept of resilience in policy and academic literatures. Next, it examines the circumstances in which resilience and transitional justice may either support or undermine each other. Although much depends upon the particular circumstances before, during, and after the conflict, transitional justice seems most likely to promote resilience when it is designed and implemented primarily by local people and in ways that accentuate existing strengths of the social system
