An analysis of the performance measurement frameworks for the public sector

The private sector-based performance measurement tools and techniques are increasingly being used in public organisations. It has been argued that the use of these techniques could help public organisations minimise waste, eliminate fraud and abuse of public resources and subsequently be more efficient and effective in providing services to the citizens. Although some researches have reported the success of these private sector-based performance measurement models, the intricacy and pitfalls identified in transferring these private sector concepts and tools to the public sector need to be examined. As such, in this paper, a conceptual analysis of the contemporary performance measurement frameworks is undertaken to determine their appropriate adaptability and implementation in the public sector.
