Apartheid in theory and practice : An economic analysis

This book consists of three parts: In the first one, various theoretical models of discrimination are explored. In particular, some crucial assumptions of some of the pioneering models by Gary Becker and Lester Thurow are examined. The second part consists of three essays that examine the economic rationale of apartheid in South Africa, how a more or less constant wage level for blacks was created, who gains and who loses from the apartheid system. The third part deals with economic sanctions as a means for ending racial discrimination. The effects of trade and investment boycotts are examined, with particular emphasis on the case of South Africa. The fourth and final part deals with why apartheid is breaking down, how the apartheid-fueled growth machine began to stall in the 1970s and how subsequently a strong pressure for change has been generated.
