Asylum and migration glossary 2.0 : a tool for better comparability
The purpose of the European Migration Network (EMN) Glossary of terms relating to Asylum and Migration coming principally from the EU acquis is inter alia to improve comparability between EU Member States through the use and common understanding of the terms and definitions contained herein. The glossary is intended to serve as a useful European reference document for EMN National Contact Points (EMN NCPs) and their national network members, policymakers and other practitioners in the Member States, as well as EU institutions, in order to facilitate the exchange of information on a common basis. In this way it can provide commonly defined terminology and support a more rational discourse on migration and asylum matters, including in the media. This is an updated version of the first EMN Glossary published in January 2010. As well as including several new terms and translations, plus an index, further revisions to some of the definitions have been made. This updated version is also complemented by additional translated versions of the EMN Glossary into French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Following the introductory text, giving an overview of the EMN and how the glossary was developed and its format, the terms are presented in tabular form. The European Migration Network (EMN) serves to meet the information needs of Union institutions and of Member States' authorities and institutions by providing up-to-date, objective, reliable and comparable information on migration and asylum, with a view to supporting policymaking in the European Union in these areas. The EMN also serves to provide the general public with such information. Further information on the EMN, including its other outputs, as well as this glossary, may be obtained from http://www.emn.europa.eu.
