Automatic Irrigation System Using IoT
Water scarcity is nowadays a global problem, which requires innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce waste. The main uses are in the agricultural sector where in most cases flood irrigation is still used. In a lower degree the domestic use is considered; here the “automated” irrigation is via temporized solenoids that turn on and off the water circulation. These kinds of systems have proved inefficiency due to not considering the real need of water for the plants and cultivations. Considering the above issues, the authors proposed Automatic Irrigation System (AIS) that uses a mobile app and microcontroller to monitor cultivations in real time; this allows the user to take informed decisions to avoid water waste. The proposed system uses moisture and temperature sensors to monitor each type of cultivation needs; with this information the system can work in automatic mode or in manual mode to be activated individually or by sections for maintenance purposes.
