In der Planung und Wissenschaft werden zur Modellierung von Prozessen kleinräumige Informationen zum Gebäudebestand (Gebäudetyp, Verteilung, Baualter, etc.) benötigt. In den Geodaten, Karten und Diensten der Vermessungsverwaltungen sind die Gebäude in ihrem Grundriss modelliert, enthalten jedoch nur selten Informationen zum Gebäudetyp.
