Changing Exile Politics : A New Look at Cubans and Cuban Americans

Although Cuban Americans are considered to be an important political voting bloc in Florida, and much research has been conducted on the foreign policy preferences of this community, little is known about the political experiences and domestic political attitudes of Cubans who settled in the Miami-Dade area. Using an original data set compiled by the author, this study explores this question, examining the political attitudes of Cubans and Cuban Americans in this area, with particular emphasis on how issues of collective identification and social context affect Cuban attitudes towards the political parties, government, and policy issues such as fiscal policy, abortion, and health care. This analysis will provide important baseline information about Cuban and Cuban American public opinion and will allow for a more nuanced understanding of the shape and character of Cuban and Cuban American politics in the United States
