Chapter 16. Replacing Internal Combustion Engine by Electric Mobility Under the Application of Smart Technologies: The Game Changer in Achieving Sustainability in Supply Chain

Purpose: Sustainable supply chains (SSCs) are a critical aspect for businesses to endure in contemporary times. This chapter examines the role of advanced technology in preserving energy resources and achieving sustainability within supply chains, specifically highlighting the potential of electric vehicles (EVs) as a solution. Design/Methodology/Approach: A thorough review of the existing body of research has been conducted to study the human decision-making process and the role of EVs in reducing carbon emissions toward generating SSCs focusing on energy usage. Findings: This chapter acknowledges the growing utilization of EVs within supply chain operations as a promising solution for achieving environmental sustainability by adhering to the environment, social, and governance (ESG) framework. The study identifies several challenges that can be addressed by implementing advanced technology in the context of EVs and integrating them into the supply chain ecosystem. Practical Implications: The current research is confined to delving into EVs and has yet to investigate alternative environmentally friendly methods for supply chain operations. Further investigation is necessary to thoroughly examine the theoretical and practical aspects of this field of study in various supply chain contexts. Originality/Value: This chapter significantly contributes to the ongoing discussion on implementing Sustainable Supply Chain Management practices through the incorporation of intelligent technology and their impact on the strategies related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Additionally, this literature-based research catalyzes future researchers to investigate the creation of value in the environment and society, resulting in mutually beneficial long-term outcomes.
