The causes of informality are many and range from imperfections in existing legislation and segmentation of the labor markets to macroeconomic adjustment programs and globalization. Some see in informality a mechanism for escaping unemployment, while for others it generates a spirit of entrepreneurship. The study has two objectives: i) To evaluate the degree of poverty and lack of social protection of informal workers in three of the region¿s countries: Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. ii) To recommend mechanisms for broadening social security and assistance coverage of informal workers in the selected countries.Abstract: El empleo informal representa una porción significativa y, en algunos países, creciente del empleo total en América Latina y El Caribe. Entre los países de la región, Venezuela es uno de los que ha experimentado un crecimiento más rápido y notable de la informalidad. El presente estudio tiene dos objetivos: evaluar las condiciones de pobreza y desprotección social de los trabajadores informales en tres países de la región: Barbados, Trinidad y Tobago, y Venezuela, y recomendar mecanismos para ampliar la cobertura de seguridad y asistencia social entre los trabajadores informales de los países seleccionados.
